Ringo, My Enamored

Ringo, My Enamored

A short comic formatted to be printed on a scroll. The short story revolves around a young girl (Zakuro) training to be a bugeisha (female samurai) during the Feudal Japan era whom is infatuated by the daughter (Ringo) of the lead bugeisha. She ends up daydreaming a heroic story.

In Feudal Japan, a bugeisha was considered nobility. In this story, the teacher is based on the real life bugeisha "Empress Jingu". The names Ringo and Zakuro mean "Apple" and "Pomegranate" respectively. I have a personal love for pomegranates, so that's the simple but truthful reason that name was chosen. Ringo's name was chosen because apple's are often used to symbolize something that is desired (like how the forbidden fruit from the bible is often represented as an apple, or how phrases like "The apple of my eye" are used commonly).

The style of this comic is inspired by Japanese wall scrolls and old woodblock printing used in historical Japan.
